[BEHIND THE TRACK] Making of “iRAP” and near collab with Pete Rock

IRap is the first track on my new album, “Vice For President 2”. Seeing as how I am an emcee and a producer equally, I wanted to make a bold anthem track for that. I have never really heard that concept come to life so I took a crack at it. The beat is really funky and has a dominant bass line. I grew up listening to cats like Pete Rock, Diamond D and Erick Sermon, and I loved how those guys used the bass line almost as the main melody in their production. I thought this would be the perfect head nodder to start he album off with.

One day while listening to the track it hit me how dope of an idea it would be to actually get another emcee/producer to join me on the track. Believe it or not I hit up the legend himself, Pete Rock. Pete has always been a cool acquaintance of mine thanks to my homie G.Huff, so when I hit him with the track it was not out of left field, and he actually thought it was dope! Unfortunately schedules could not align because he was working on a joint project with Smoke DZA as well as touring, so the collab had to be sidelined.

The final touch to the song was the brilliant idea of adding a scratch hook using the Dr. Dre sample, “With A producer who can rap and control the maestro.” I can’t take credit for that one. My big brother Malic thought that up, and I’m glad he did, because it was the final ingredient that set the song off! I hit up my homie DJ NuEra and he laced it beautifully and the rest is Hip Hop history.
